Styles Of Listening Essay

Listening constitutes several processes of receiving, understanding, remembering, evaluating and responding to communications. The act of listening enables learning, acquiring of information, forming and maintaining relationship, as well as influencing and posing effect on the attitude and behaviors of others. Styles of listening can be divided into four contrastive pairs; empathic-objective listening, nonjudgmental-critical listening, surface-depth listening and active-passive listening.

Nonjudgmentally, followers of other beliefs are to acknowledge the presence of this “new” religion, but critically, the existence of anti-cult movement i.e. Christian counter cult movement deemed it’s outside of Christian orthodoxy and theologically deviant. Thus, establishing an opposition party which indicates rejection is purposeful based on the given justification.
Thirdly, surface-depth listening refers to the extent to which you focus on the obvious surface meanings. Surface listening is aiming at the obvious and literal meaning. However, depth listening is subtext, which meaning is deep and hidden. Most messages come with obvious meaning which can be derived from literal reading of words and sentences whereas listening between the lines, hearing the emotion, monitoring body language, detecting needs and goals as well as making inferences based on beliefs and values require strong psychological understanding. Consider a conversation on regular basis between parents and children; working parents who came home complaining about the tiring day may, on a deeper level, be asking for an expression of appreciation and comfort from the spouse and children. Literally, the children shall interpret the complaint as for them to stay away and let the parents be on their own due to the upset mood.
Fourthly, active-passive listening refers to the extent to which you reflect back on what you think the speaker means both in content and feeling. Listening active involves the process of sending back to the speaker, what you think his content and feelings meant. Passive listening in contrast, is merely repeating the speaker’s exact words, or simply a “recorder” instead of paraphrasing the meaningful whole. For instance, when a lecture is given to the students in a classroom, the act of jotting down notes displayed on the slide shall means the students are merely listening, without knowing what’s important.
