Leaders are everywhere in everyday life, in our homes, places of work, in our schools and in our communities. Leaders are likely anywhere that influence and direction are essential and it is obvious when a beneficial leader is not present. Imagine if businesses were ran without managers or supervisors, would the business likely fail because there is not a person directing and assisting with goals of the business. Better yet, think of a country without any governing laws or leadership, there would be chaos. Not having a successful leader is almost as damaging as not having any leader at all. Leadership skills are beneficial in all areas of life, when utilizing these skills in a positive manner success is probable.
When leadership skills are developed and perfected, they are beneficial for everyone. These skills help develop self-confidence and if used in a positive manner it develops role models for others. In schools, teachers with positive leadership skills help their students set goals and help them build their own leadership skills to accomplish their goals. In the workplace, supervisors or managers that have developed these skills assist their staff to work together as teams to accomplish the goals of the company. At home, a parent that assists their children in developing problem solving skills, organization and give praise when due help their children in becoming successful adults. Skills that are desirable to be a successful leader are not always skills or traits that one is born with but learned thru experiences or communicated thru role models.
According to Kay H. Roman, some of the traits that are key to becoming a successful leader are being able to work well with other people, effective time management with tasks and being able to meet goals. (1) Whether these traits are things that come naturally or one has learned thru experience; these traits give one the advantage in leadership. These traits are also characteristics that employers look for when hiring employees and particularly judge when it is a position of leadership for example management. These traits are a great beginning to becoming a great leader but there are also skills to take into account.
According to Roman, five leadership skills are necessary in effectively managing people “Understanding behavioral styles, listening and effectively communicating, giving praise, handling criticism and using problem-solving and persuasion instead of criticism.” (2) For example, if we have a better understanding of people and how they may react to a situation then we might approach them in a certain manner to avoid a negative reaction. The second skill mentioned was listening and communicating, one is not truly communicating if they are not listening to what others are saying. “The skill of listening is important in all aspects of our life and especially when leading a team. When you listen to another person, you demonstrate respect for that person.” (Roman 3)...
