Suicide Essay

1444 words - 6 pages

Suicides are becoming a major role in this day and age. The thought of one ending his or her life is developing in many minds of teenagers around the globe. There are many reasons to why a person may put their life in risk for example, depression, stress, and being bullied. Suicide is rising all over the world and needs to be looked at as a worldwide threat. Globally, the rate of teen suicide rises daily; therefore, many precautions such as therapy, antidepressants, and suicide hotlines prevent such a tragedy from occurring.
Although some teens commit suicide without giving any warning ahead of time, most say or do things that warn people of their intentions to take their own lives (Parks 63). There are various warning signs that someone may give. Such signs may include sudden lost in appetite, hopelessness, or persistent sadness. Many teens choose alcohol or drugs for a way to commit suicide. The way they act at school and home can sometimes indicate depression (Galas 8). When being depressed this can cause people to drink or do drugs. When drunk or high, the thought of suicide may become more vivid and can lead to the situation actually occurring (Galas 67). Alcohol and certain drugs can calm the body down and relax the muscles. Some people believe that such substances like alcohol and drugs can increase the suicide thoughts on people. The use of drugs is one of the most common ways for teens to commit suicide. About 88% of teens choose drugs to attempt suicide (Galas 79). In addition to drugs and alcohol, a sudden change in mood can be another sign of one wanting to commit suicide. People may become more antisocial and would want to be left alone more frequently. They may start to keep to themselves more often and become more quite around people. People need to start paying more attention to others and try to see if there are any signs of depression. By noticing if a friend is becoming more depressed it is easier to get help in the beginning rather than the end.
Suicide is the answer to some people when he or she may fear the future. Anger can be another case or one might feel that everything is his or her own fault (Schleifer 31). Some other motives may include doing badly in school, parents are getting a divorce, violence at home, and being rejected by friends or a loved one could have passed away (Marcovitz 49). When it comes to suicide, depression is probably the greatest factor. Depression is related to 2/3 of all suicides (Suicide and its Prevention). Although depression is not permanent it can last for some time if it is not treated. Depression can last for as long as someone allows it to. “When the depression lifts, the teen suddenly may have the ability to plan his or her death, to make decisions about how and when it will happen, and to carry out those plans” (Galas 71-72). Stress can also lead to someone attempting suicide. There are many types of things that can give someone stress. Every teen feels stress at some point in their...
