Summer Food Service Program Essay

Many families are currently living in poverty. They cannot even afford some of the basic necessities of life. Public schools already prove to be a great aid because they are free to those living in the designated area. However, low-income families may struggle with providing all three meals to their children. During the school year, many schools provide free breakfast and lunch to those who qualify. Yet schools isn’t in session all year long. The Summer Food Service Program provides free or reduced-price meals to children under the age of 18 in low-income families. These programs are crucial because they ensure that children maintain a nutritious diet throughout the summer.

Many different organizations can be sponsors. These include nonprofit schools, units of government, private nonprofit organizations, nonprofit camps, and nonprofit colleges or universities. Meals comes from many sources. Sponsors “may prepare its own meals, purchase meals through an agreement with an area school, or contract...with a food service management company” (USDA). There are many factors that help contribute to providing meals to in need students over the summer.
The Summer Food Service Program is important because children who miss meals do poorly in school. They cannot get what they need to grow and develop their minds. Food services in the summer ensure students are staying healthy so they can maintain a balanced lifestyle, and return to school prepared to learn. Schools cannot give up on their students after the school year is over. Children need to be guaranteed a warm nutritious meal all year long. 
The USDA Office of Communications press release describes how Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsak visited a Chicago school to help increase summer meal programs. On March 27, 2014, Vilsak visited the school to help the fight against hunger. He wants to ensure no child goes hungry over the summer. Only 11% of eligible students receive meals over the summer in Illinois. He discusses the importance of the programs and their value to the students. Vilsak explains, “Research shows a lack of nutrition during the summer months can set up a cycle for poor performance once school begins.” This is the press release given by the USDA. Its purpose is to inform the nation about the staggering participation in the Summer Food Service Program and the importance of it.
