As the world reaches its 21st century people question what privacy means to individuals and the benefits of becoming more open with information. The government collects information on everyone for the safety of everyone. Further, the recent increase in surveillance, public and private, help catch criminals. On to, recent developments into new surveillance technology help to secure information. Outweighing the sacrifice of becoming more open with information outweighs the danger of being terrorized.
Unlike popular belief, data collection is not to invade on specific individuals, in fact, it is to intercept information on illegal activities to better secure the safety of everyone. “Despite the outrage expressed by some over the NSA’s domestic surveillance programs, roughly 56 percent of Americans believe it is ‘acceptable’ for the spy agency to secretly collect the telephone call records of millions of Americans according to a new Washington Post-Pew Research Center poll.” (Howerton) thus proving that the thought of publicly shared information is in the minds of the majority of Americans. Marc A. Thiessen challenges that “if the critics don’t think the NSA should be collecting this information, perhaps they would like to explain just how they would have us stop new terrorist attacks.” He continues explaining two of the most popular, and not in a good way, methods of retrieving information and then explains “Well, without interrogations or signals intelligence, how exactly is the president supposed to protect the country.” And that reveals that if this method of information is gone theres not really any other options to help stop terrorist threats.
With the increase of surveillance, comes the increased the ability of the police to catch criminals. A recent terrorist activity, nicknamed “The Boston Bombing”, brought up an interesting subject that “Investigators swiftly obtained a vast quantity of amateur photos and videos taken by onlookers, often with their cellphones, as well as extensive footage from surveillance cameras in the area of the blasts.” (Crary) Thus nullifying the difference between public and private informations collection since with the help of both, the investigators were able to quickly capture the two culprits. Although terrorist activities are the main focus of most surveillance solutions they also help solve murder cases, “Just this week, security video helped lead to the arrests of a Texas couple in the slaying of two prosecutors and the wife of one of them.” (Crary) Even more so, “Police credit the network for thousands of arrests in recent years.” (Crary) showing that the the...
