In fact, there are several different ways in which a syllabus can be defined (Hutchinson 1987). A syllabus is a statement of content which is used as the basis for planning courses of various kinds, and the task of the syllabus designer is to select and grade this content (David Nunan).To begin with, it is necessary to distinguish between two very close concepts: syllabus and curriculumCurriculum' is concerned with the planning, implementation, evaluation,management, and administration of education programmer. 'Syllabus', on the other hand, focuses more narrowly on the selection and grading of content. Traditionally syllabus design has been seen as a subsidiary component of curriculum design.One document which gives a detailed account of the various syllabus components which need to be considered in developing language courses is Threshold Level English in which are listed the following necessary components of a language syllabus:1the situations in which the foreign language will be used, including the topics which trill be dealt with;2the language activities in which the learner will engage;3the language functions which the learner will fulfill;4what the learner will be able to do with respect to each topic;5the general notions which the learner will be able to handle;6the specific (topic-related) notions which the learner will be able to handle;7the language forms which the learner will be able to use;8the degree of skill with which the learner will be able to perform.(van Ek 1975: 8-9)The syllabus lays down the extent of the knowledge; habits and skills pupils must acquire the sequence topics which constitute the academic content of the subject. The syllabus is an essential document for every teacher, and he is responsible for the fulfillment of its requirements.In the syllabus the teacher will find all the instructions concerning the knowledge he must import to his pupils, the habits and skills he must develop etc. The textbook for every form should correspond to the syllabus.Common characteristics of a syllabusA syllabus is a document which consists, essentially, of a list.
