Symbolism is a characteristic that stands out in a person or thing. People usually use symbolism for something that means to them or represents to them. The symbols are used for many things, for example the apple on the iphone, laptop or iPod symbolizes the brand. Symbols are also used in churches, for example the cross symbolizes Jesus Christ. It symbolizes how he was crucified, put to death on a cross. The colors symbolize something’s to for example the colors white, red and blue symbolize freedom in the United States, it also represents the United States flag. Symbols are also used in movies like the hunger games catching fire; their symbol is a mocking bird with an arrow on it.
A Worn Path is about a long walk through the woods an old lady named Phoenix Jackson has to go through every time her grandson runs out of medicine. A long time ago her grandson swallowed lye that ruined his throat, the medicine is the only thing that relives the pain to his grandson. Throughout the woods to Natchez town Phoenix goes through so many things. Phoenix would go through the woods every time his grandson would finish his medicine because histheonly person she has from her family, she doesn’t want to lose him.Throughout her walk through the woods phoenix bumps into a lot of things, she bumps into animals in the woods, she gets stuck in a thorn bush, and she falls on a ditch. Phoenix is a really strong lady that would sacrifice herself everyday just to go get medicine for his grandson.

In Eudora Welty’s A Worn Path, symbols are used in multiplex ways in the short story.In the story the character Phoenix Jackson is a symbol of a mythical bird. A mythical bird is a bird that lives 500 years, dies & is reborn again. Phoenix is described as a mythical bird because they describe her as if she’s lived more than a century. In an article titled “’A Worn Path’ Analysis” the author declares “Phoenix bird has a cycle of life, death, and rebirth”. In the story “A Worn Path”, Eudora Welty describes Phoenix Jackson as an “old Negro woman” (Welty1274).
Endurance also represents Phoenix because even though she struggles to get his grandsons medicine, she still manages to go through the woods to the town and back to her house just to get his medicine. In the article “‘A Worn Path’ Analysis”, “she falls, gets back up and keeps on toward the goal of getting her grandsons medicine.” When Phoenix gets help from the hunter, he tells her to go home and she says “no sir I going to town” (Welty1277).She still wouldn’t give up to go get his grandsons medicine. Phoenix is a very brave and strong woman because she shows what she would go through every time his grandson runs out of medicine, she would sacrifice herself anything foe his grandson.
