In “The Cask of Amontillado”, the author, Edgar Allen Poe, uses symbolism and irony to connect to the readers. Symbolism is an object or word that has two meanings. Poe uses this device when he writes, “Fortunado is dressed as a fool”(20). It is symbolic representation of what Fortunado is. Irony is a twist in a situation that creates tension between the two conflicts. Poe uses irony throughout his story as a way of enticing readers.
The narrator, Montresor, tells about how he got revenge 50 years prior towards Fortunado who greatly offended him. He used Fortunado’s love of wine against him, and once Fortunado was drunk, Montresor left him to die in an unthinkable and cruel way.

He then remembers how Fortunado had hurt him and thinks if maybe he gets revenge on him he will fix it but in the end he feels bad Montresor and he will eventually wish that his life is devastated and his problems won’t be able to get fixed by killing Fortunado. He will have to live with the fact that his life is ruined, and he has murdered someone and have to live with it over the fact that Fortunado offended him. He is just a hopeless human, andFortunado is a very gullible and gets tricked by an old friend.
Montresor had told him how he has Amontillado and has offered him to taste it to see if it is real because he wonders if it really is Amontillado, for he has never tried it. He yearns to taste it, and Montresor tells him if he can’t, he has someone else in mind that Fortunadodislikes.
Fortunado tells Montresor to take him to his vault, and when they go to Montresor’shouse, they go down to the vaults and Fortunadostarts to cough.
Montresor thinks it might slow him down, but Fortunado says it is nothing;nitre is on the walls of the catacomb’ succumbs from water. It disintegrates into moldy particles in the air. “’The nitre!’ I said,’ see, it increases. It hangs like mass upon the vaults. We are below the river’s bed. The drops of moisture trickle among the bones. Come, we will go back ere it is too late. Your cough.’”(23)Fortunadotell’s him he is fine and they go on. Montresor gives him some wine to drink along the way. For one so he can get him drunk maybe even to get him silenced.
Fortunado starts getting unstable and cant control himself. Fortunado toasts “to the buried that repose.” That is verbally ironic because he is soon going to be one of those body’s. Eventually Fortunado start’s coughing worse Montresor asks him if he is fine. Fortunado states “I shall not die of a cough” and Montresorironically replies “true.”(22) That is verbally ironic because he isn’t going to die of a cough. Montresor is going to leave him to die and he regrets it.
