In the short story “A Worn Path” the author uses symbolism through the short story, symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Symbolism is the part of the story that is not so literal, it’s the part of the story where you have to use your mind to find it, sometimes it can be really difficult to but most of the time it is really easy. In some stories there’s a lot of them but in some there not many. Like in our short story, A Worn Path by Eudora Welty there is a lot of them.
This short story is about an old black lady, whose name is phoenix Jackson that makes sacrifices, for his grandson, she has to go to Natchez, is a city far from where Phoenix Jackson lives. She goes there to get medicine for her grandson. This lady had to face many obstacles in her way like her fall into a ditch, and she was mad at herself for falling, but it was actually a dog who made her fall into it, she needed help but no one helped her until the white hunter came and help, he didn’t thought that she had a good reason for her to go to the city so he told her to go back, but she said she had to go for something important, then she saw a dime in the floor that it was probably of the White hunter, she got it when the White hunter was distracted then the White hunter pointed the gun at her, she didn’t get scare so the White hunter respected that and he said that if “he had a dime he would had giving it to her” (Welty 1278), which it was pretty ironic because Phoenix had the dime and the White hunter didn’t know so it was like if the White hunter gave the dime to her. She had to go through a barbed
wire fence, she had to go through a creek, and if she would had fallen on the creek, she could had died because it was winter and there was water in the creek Even though she face many obstacles she never gave up into she reach her destination, when she got there the one nurse ask what she wanted and she didn’t answer at the first nurse then the other nurse answer by saying that she makes a trip every time she needed medicine for her grandson. So the nurse gave her the medicine and said that it was from the doctor for charity, then the nurse felt sorry for her and gave her a dime and she already had another dime that she had stolen or found when she was with the White hunter. In the story it doesn’t say what happens after that but most likely she went to the store and bought his grandson the toy she saw before she enters the hospital.
In Eudora Welty’s “A Worn Path” symbolism is used throughout the short story.
In this story there’s many characters the first or main character is Phoenix Jackson she symbolizes many things like endurance, “despite her age and obvious infirmity she makes the difficult walk along the path, and none of the obstacles in her way stop her.” She is an older woman and she has the “endurance” to keep doing what it was necessary to keep his grandson healthy, because her grandson is sick, he drank something...
