Educational research has changed with the cognitive revolution. It is now thought that understanding what is happening in the minds of students during instruction should be the focus of study, instead of studying time spent in the classroom. This theory works well with the concept of cyber- education. Cyber leaders believe that their form of education can produce authentic learning. However, cyber-school leaders do acknowledge that the way learning and attendance is measured must be changed to fit their model. In educational theory, this is referred to as “opportunity to learn.” This means that students who spend more time actively engaged in learning with a qualified adult leading the process obtain greater academic success than their peers who are left to learn on their own. Data from a Pennsylvania cyber-charter school will illustrate the importance of trained professional in the education of secondary cyber-charter school students. The data for this discussion will come from a Pennsylvania cyber-charter school, which will be referred to as PA Online Chart School as a means to protect the anonymity of the students.
How Cyber-Charter Schools Can Effectively Use Synchronous Sessions
When discussing instructional time, in educational theory, there is some vagueness in the definition. Often, there is not agreement to what the concept of what instructional time means. In his paper, What is all the Fuss About Instructional Time, David Berliner broke instructional time into six categories in which the meaning and concept can be “reliable and validly measured” (Berliner). It is important to think of instructional time as a multifaceted concept. This is because of a multitude of important and seemingly different ideas that are members of the same group as instructional time.
In schools, allocated time is defined as the time the state, the school district, or the teachers provide for students’ education. In Pennsylvania, this would be the 180 days of schools that public schools must provide each year to their students. Further, at PA Online Cyber-Charter School, the allocated time would also account for the six hours students are to spend each day in active learning. At PA Online Cyber-Charter School, this time can vary from student to student depending on their schedule, as well as which classes are offered on certain days.
