Teachers play a huge role in the development of a child's life, next to their parents of course. Being a teacher is undoubtedly one of the most challenging jobs around. They start shaping a child's behavior and brain from about age 5 to the age of 18 and possibly even longer if they choose to further their studies at a University or a College or even a Technikon. Teachers help our kids distinguish between right and wrong, they teach the kids how to read and write, they also teach our kids how to interact with other children (basically teaching them how to socialize). First I will discuss how underappreciated teachers really are and I will also discuss how much the average teacher earns in South Africa. And then lastly, why I think teachers should be paid more.
Teaching is not only an underpaying job but it is also an underappreciated employment. Being a former high school student, I have a lot of experience with interacting with teachers. During my high school days I could see the way students were treating the teachers, it was very bad and I feel it is unacceptable. There is so much disrespect and ill-discipline showed towards teachers on a day to day basis and I think it’s the way society views and talks about teachers. Teachers are looked down upon, this is largely due to the fact that teachers earn a very low salary. Teachers are not credited for the amount of work they do. Teachers are a huge reason why people grow up to be the people they are today. They look after the children of the society when they are at work, inevitably they become babysitters. Babysitting is another task which people also get paid for. Personally think the salary of a babysitter should be included in the salary of an educator.
Teachers also earn a very low salary in comparison to the work that they do. The average high school teacher in South Africa earns R153 000 annually. This means they earn R12 750 per month which is ridiculous in comparison to the amount of work that they put in. Teachers with less than 4 years of experience therefore earn between R60 000 and R198 000 per year, while teachers with 5 to 9 years of experience earn between R80 000 and R230 000 per year. Experienced professionals with more than 10 years of experience are prone to earn up to R280 000 per year. This is for me totally unacceptable because you’d find that a doctor or a lawyer with that much experience earns twice if not three times the amount that a teacher earns. Teachers work more or less 40 hours per week, but it doesn’t stop there as they take their work home. They work overtime and do not get paid for it. They also work on weekends when they mark exams and tests. This is unfortunately the sad part of it all, it makes being a teacher almost a 3rd or 4th choice for a prospective student that seeks to further their studies. The lack of salary increase is the main problem and thus causes shortages in the occupation.
I fail to understand why a sportsman earns a whole lot more...
