Our world is becoming more and more technology oriented. Many classrooms are embracing new technology and using it in the context of the classroom. There are many education-based games that are designed specifically for electronic devices to aid in teaching children. “Storytime Using iPods: Using Technology to Reach all Learners” by Boeglin-Quintana and Donavan and “A Tablet Computer for Young Children? Exploring Its Viability for Early Childhood Education” by Couse and Chen are two studies that explored the effect of technology on student learning.
The Boeglin-Quintana and Donavan (2013) explored the impact of electronic media on student motivation and vocabulary comprehension. Nine students in a Kindergarten classroom received iPod shuffles that were loaded with both fiction and non-fiction books that were considered to be of high interest. Only 9 students received iPods as there were only 9 iPods available and they wanted students to have access to it at all times. The other 17 students were in the non-iPod group, which served as the control group. Each story was read with an accompanying book, and had bell tone to signal when to turn the page. The stories were read over a period of six weeks. The stories were read during silent reading time. This study did not find any significant gains in vocabulary, but did find an increase in motivation. They found that children in the iPod group were excited to use the iPod, which motivated them to engage in silent reading. They observed that the children in the iPod group were more likely to sit for the whole story and answer comprehension questions about the story, as opposed to children in the control group who were usually distracted from their own book as evidenced by their talking to peers and paying attention to things other than their reading book. They also observed many children flipping through the books and just looking at pictures. The researchers interpreted this as an indication that the children could not decode the words or connect the words to the pictures in the story. Although this study did not find significant gains in terms of vocabulary development, they did find other benefits to using the iPods.
