According to a PBS Learning Media national survey that took place in 2013, 7 in 10 K-12 teachers stated that educational technology allows them to do much more than they ever could do for the education of their students. (Melissa Mills) But are their opinions supported by facts? Modern technology hasn’t always been a mainstay in the classroom, but in recent decades our education system has been reforming to rely more heavily on technology to create a better learning environment for all students. Furman. Ms. Furman stated that as a teacher she felt that using computers and other means of technology as tools for basic learning made it more difficult for her students to connect with their learning on a personal level. Although schools all over the country are investing in technology for their students, Ms. Furman is one example of a teacher that isn’t excited about the change, and doesn’t like where the education system is headed. Kyrene School District is one example of a school that invested millions of dollars in technology for their classrooms, but has failed to see improvements in their test scores as a result of the new technology spending. In 2005, the voters of Kyrene School District voted to approve a new budget that would allow the school to spend an extra $10 million on technology resources for the school, while also cutting back funds on textbooks and salaries for their staff. The district was hopeful that they would see major increases in their students test scores on the Arizona math and reading tests, but have seen no improvements since the implementation of the new technology. Kyrene School District has been used as an example that has been used to debunk the theory that schools need more technology to raise their students test scores and provide their students with the greatest possible learning experience. If a Kyrene School District has put so much money into technology, and dedicated countless hours of time into teaching their staff the proper ways to utilize this technology, but still haven’t seen an increase in test scores, why would this model of education work anywhere else? Using Kyrene as a model, they seem to have a solid argument against the use of technology in classrooms. They’ve invested millions of dollars into a program that hasn’t improved test scores in any way, so obviously there is a problem with this method of teaching. Whether it be that the technology distracts the students, the technology is too complicated for them to understand, or the technology is too hard to connect with on a personal level doesn’t matter.
Although there is evidence from schools like Kyrene that shows that technology doesn’t necessarily improve test scores for students, there is evidence from other studies that show that it does improve the education of students. Researchers in Maine found that in 2002 when they provided a class of eighth-graders their writing scores improved. The same researchers found that math scores increased when they taught the staff and teachers how to properly use laptops for teaching purposes. (Matt Richtel) Aside from simply increasing test scores and improving the teaching methods of instructors at schools, technology can have other benefits in the classroom.
