How should we keep our son from drinking? This question has been asked millions of times in thousands of households. People are unsure what to do about their immature child. They fear that the child will sneak out of the house and go to parties. There the child will get drunk and try to drive home, getting into an accident and ending their life. This problem can be solved through several different things. These activities include never accepting or allowing underage drinking, never letting your teen see you drunk or drive after a couple drinks, and knowing what their mode of transportation is.
One of the best ways to keep your teen from drinking is to never accept or allow underage drinking. In one of his online articles, Ralph Taylor says, “Never condone drinking”. This means that you should never talk acceptingly about kids under the age of 21 consuming alcohol. “Talking to children as young as age 6”(Adam S.) This action will help because it teaches the child at a young age that drinking is not okay. Teens drink because their parents do, either that or they have never disapproved of it. As a parent, you should clearly never condone drinking while under the legal drinking age.
An effective way to keep your teen from drinking is to not drink in front of them, or let them see you drink and drive. This can be associated with the well known proverb, ‘Monkey see, monkey do’. Yet parents are not the only ones that can follow this rule. “Citizen action to reduce commercial and social availability of alcohol”(Komro and Toomey). This means that the community can make alcohol less accessible to teens and not advertise it as much. This way teens will not be as obliged to use alcohol, and if they are, it will be very difficult for them to get it. This is clearly an action that should be put into place nationwide.
