History is constantly repeating itself. Even though things are over and done with once they happen, that doesn’t mean that they don’t have an influence on what happens in the future. Greek myths are a prime example of this. Though they are extremely old, they still share similarities in the ways that we think and have a major influence on modern hero stories. Joseph Campbell, an American mythologist, wrote a theory called the “monomyth,” which shows that all ancient hero myths follow the same basic pattern. Many classic myths can be easily comparable to a modern hero story, such as The Dark Knight. Based on Campbell’s analysis of the monomyth, you can see that both The Dark Knight and the myth stories have an uncomfortable home situation. They have a call to adventure, and go through a phrase of denial and refusal. They learn truths about their pasts, receive special items, and cross the threshold. Both will be able to test allies and enemies, meet a girl, and approach and prepare for the journey they’re about to do. Then finally, they go through the ordeal expedition, and receive a reward at the end.
Bruce Wayne, who is Batman in disguise, was born and raised in Gotham City. In the first movie, the Batman was able to defeat the Joker, and save the citizens of his city. Luckily, he had Jim Gordon, Lieutenant of Gotham, to help him. He also originally had Harvey Dent, District Attorney of Gotham, on his side until the Joker got the best of him and turned him against the good guys. In the second movie, Bane comes into the picture. He is the ultimate evil; it is almost as if he is undefeatable. Batman must first visit the underground sewage tunnels where Bane lives, along with a full army he has behind him. He is led down there by cat woman, who locked him behind the gate with Bane. She was originally on Bane’s side, wanting something that only he possessed this way she would be able to clear her name and flee town forever. But eventually, they team up and are able to defeat Bane by the end of the movie, and save the city from a nuclear bomb that had seconds left until its explosion.
In the hero myths, for exmple Hercules, many journeys were taken. One of those included killing the Nemean lion. He was ordered to bring his skin to Eurystheus. He had to strangle him with his hands since he could not be killed by using arrows, and when he finally killed him he decided to keep the skin instead of giving it to Eurystheus, which made him invincible. This is relatable to Batman because Batman had to make up on lost time. He gave up on his company, he gave up on the original love of his life Rachel, and he gave up on himself. But he had to redeem himself for that and kill the Joker and Bane. Hercules had to make up for killing Megara, which is why he was sent out to kill the lion. Another example from a classical hero was Odysseus. One of his journeys was when he went to the Island of the Cyclopes. Odysseus and his men found the cave...
