Due to the increasing healthcare needs of the population, services are increasing too. Nurses can play important role in health promotion by educating people about health promotion plans, focusing on physical activity, vaccination, healthy diets, smoking cessation and many other increasing health issues, the healthcare providers can promote the health need of the people.
This paper intends to provide health promotion definition, explain the aims of health promotion in nursing , nursing roles and responsibilities evolving in health promotion, describes how to implement health promotion that includes all nursing areas and comparison of the three levels of health promotion.
Health promotion is defined as a means of empowering people to take charge of their health. It is not limited to individual behavior but toward a broad range of social and environmental interventions (WHO 2014). WHO also stated that, there is need for countries to create procedures and plans that makes health promotion a part of the public health development itinerary. Health promotion is the means of helping people enhance their well-being and increase their human potential. Health promotion focuses on changing behaviors and lifestyles to promote health rather than simply to avoid illness. Health promotion provides people opportunity to be in charge of their health by their actions and choices (Edelman & Mandle, 2010).
Aims of health promotion
In healthcare professional, nurses play key roles in guiding health decision of individuals, families, communities, organizations and global bodies toward health promotion (Dot 2007). Nurses are required to be fully engaged with promotion, because nurses are seen as ‘social activist’ and should take leadership role in order to improve health condition of the population (Whitehead, 2011). This focus on principles that improve the wellbeing of the people by creating atmosphere for healthy living and health choices. The aim of health promotion is to enable people to take control over their health and in order to improve their health, focusing on individuals and populations as a whole and not mainly on people who are at risk for specific diseases (Maurer & Smith 2013).
Nurses roles and responsibilities
Nurses should create efficient health promotion plan focusing on ‘justice, health equality and involved the communities in the health promotion in order to avoid health disparities (Whitehead, 2011). Nurses should be political advocacy which gives them, the chances to extend their traditional roles to leadership role in health promotion.
