Research on nutrient deficiencies in crops have been conducted for many years. Curiosity has driven these studies to be reconducted and reconstructed to emphasize different results. Most people in the agriculture industry know that plants need Nitrogen to be high yield producing products. What if you were to strip a plant of that nutrient? More importantly, what would be the end result of the plant? There has been research done in which crops are being planted in nutrient rich soil but missing that key element, Nitrogen. With the nitrogen absent, it can show signs of weakness and other characteristics making it obvious that it is affected. Also, the role organic matter has on these plants and the soil type in which they are planted. With this, you may find what roles nitrogen has on a crop, signs that the crop is nitrogen depleted, the role organic matter can play that may or not have on growing conditions. When conducting these experiments, it would behoove the researcher to understand the results and what exactly was occurring and causing the plant to show the abnormalities or the success of the plant.
The role of nitrogen is very important to plant life. NSW reports that the only thing more important than nitrogen in plants is water. Nitrogen is all around the atmosphere in many forms. Chemical forms of nitrogen include; nitrogen gas, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, ammonium, nitrous oxide, and nitric oxide. Not all forms of these chemicals are available to the plant for use. Nitrate is the most common that is used by the plant in the uptake of nitrogen. Plants usually have to wait for the nitrogen to be released by being broken down in the soils by bacteria, fungi, and other organisms in the soils. This is known as the nitrogen cycle. The nitrogen cycle can be a very strenuous and long process for breaking down the chemical compounds making it readily available for the nitrogen to then be taken up by the plant.
Many studies have been conducted through out the years to try and discover what role Nitrogen actually has on plant materials and the systems that occur with in the plant. Knowing these properties helps the researcher understand why what is happening is happening or when a new characteristic investigating what process fail or greatly succeeded. John R. Evans tested the effects of Nitrogen and the effect it has on the photosynthesis in C3 plants. It has been found that Nitrogen is a large factor in the photosynthetic process within the plant Calvin cycle and also has influences on thykaloids. In order to effectively measure the performance of the plants being grown the use of a drying oven is used. It is best to wash away the soil media from the plant with deionized water, then weight the plant before drying and the weigh the product gain after drying.
