What costs one driver his life or livelihood may cost another only fifty dollars. Penalties for texting and driving vary across the US. Teens today are getting in more accidents because of distracted driving. Every time you text while driving you put yourself in danger and other people in danger. Texting while driving increases your chances of getting into an auto accident. Distracted driving is a serious crime and deserves a serious penalty.
The first text message was sent on December 3, 1992 by a 22 year old, Neil Papworth. He used his personal computer to send a text via the Vodafone network to Richard Jarvis’s personal phone. It was just a general text saying Merry Christmas (Limer). In 1993, the Nokia 1011 was the first mobile phone to be mass produced that could be used for texting (Smith). People started to text and drive when texting became popular in June of 2007. Texting has increased 450 percent from 2006. In 2007 an average of 2.5 billion text messages were sent and received per day. Texting first became popular in Europe and Asia because it was less expensive to text someone than to call them. In the United States the texting cost was increasing 1 from 20 cents per text in 2007 to 2008. Carriers now offer unlimited texting for a higher price per month. The increase in text messaging is largely due to teens from age 13 to 17, who send and receive approximately 1700 a month. They are trying to get every state to help prevent this trend of texting while they are driving.
Next they first state to pass a law is in the top left of the United States. In 2007, Washington was the first state to pass a law about banning texting and driving. Currently 43 states ban texting and driving for all drivers. All of the 43 states have a fine for texting and driving and it ranges from 20 to 10,000 dollars. The 4 out of the 7 states that don’t ban all ages from texting and driving, ban novice drivers from texting while driving. The other 3 restrict bus drivers from texting while on the job (distracted driving laws). They started to improve the technology and they came out with a new invention.
