The Adult Learner And Online Competency

As an adult learner in an online learning environment, a certain amount of readiness skills will be necessary. The measure of readiness skills required to flourish within the online environment will be addressed. The current study sought to ascertain whether a relationship exists between readiness levels of the online learning students for online learning and the perceived structure and interplay in online learning environments. (Kaymak & Horzum, 2013). Various information shall be presented to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of the online learning environment. This paper will identify the difference between the adult learner and a traditional learner. The main purpose of this paper is to bring together statistics of the functionality of the adult learner within the online learning environment, institutional support and the students’ sense of self-efficacy. This paper will corroborate the desideratum for assessment of students' self-directed learning ability and information technology skills competency at the outset of an online course or program (Shinkareva & Benson, 2007).

The prosperous student views the online environment as a more convenient way to take distribution of their inculcation, not a more facile way (Tomei, 2010). The requisites for distance-predicated courses are no less than that of any other quality instructional program (Tomei, 2010). Online is not a more facile approach for learning course content (Tomei, 2010). For both the instructor and the student, distance education insistence more time and vigor than the more traditional classroom method (Tomei, 2010). Distance learning necessitates students to make determinations based on facts and experience (Tomei, 2010). The instructors must become facilitators of the process, ensuring students receive the necessary data, time, and experimental opportunities to further this view of learning (Tomei, 2010).

Many attributes of the adult learner and traditional learner can be separated into different categories. Many adult learners have postponed entering college after graduating high school (Tews, 2013). The reasoning for postponement is different for each individual pupil (Tews, 2013). Adult students often attend school only part-time, as compared to the traditional full-time position (Tews, 2013). Traditional students often work to flourish in the subjects regardless of their destination (Tews, 2013). Adult learners are outcome oriented, when adults do not visualize the desired result they leave school (Tews, 2013). Many traditional students have family that expects them to stay in school (Tews, 2013). As compared to the adult learner, traditional learners may not always have clear objectives in mind (Tews, 2013). Adult learners are more disposed to accepting accountability for their own learning (Tews, 2013).
