Are there any people who have never lied? Of course, there is no human being who has never lied. According to statistics shown in “Brain Statistics”, about sixty percent of people lie at least once during ten minute conversation. Lying plays an important role in our life. People have been lying since their childhood. Saki, twentieth-century British writer, said: “A little inaccuracy sometimes saves a lot of explonations” (Northstar 5 Listening and Speaking, page 44). For instance, if the person changed his own summary, added a lot of unreliable information and special skills such as being good at computer or marketing, employer would think that that person is a good specialist at his or her sphere and will provide that person with a job. Moreover, this kind of lying will help them even after finishing their own career. In some countries pension, which is given after finishing career and reaching a certain age, depends on the employee’s salary. If an employee has high position, it means that person has a high salary. Even if the worker fails from work, he or she will find a better job than the previous one was, and if the worker retires from work, he or she will be paid a big pension. As can be seen by the preceding information sometimes lying provides a high position and good salary at work and even sufficient pension.
There are not only advantages, but also disadvantages of telling a lie. One of the disadvantages is that people can suffer from their own conscience. They will do something against their conscience; their mind will always remind them about their lie. Estonian proverb says: “Lie has short legs” (Northstar 5 Listening and Speaking, page 44). It means that we cannot forget our lie, it will stay forever in our mind because lie cannot move anywhere because of “short legs”. Even if we tell the truth, something will always remind us about our lying. For example, if you betray or abandon your family, your conscience will “kill” you. Your conscience will not let the lie vanish from your mind, it will always remind you about lying. To sum up, people suffer from their conscience because of their lying.
