"While these techniques helped regenerate sales and encourage attendance, the positive results were short-lived. By 1956, most of the major Hollywood studios had sold films to television. That same year, at least one television set could be found in nearly two-thirds of all U.S. homes. A growing number of films were being tailored directly for television in the 1960's, which created a need for revised censorship. The changing cultural and social values required a new film-rating system that reflected the current times.The Motion Picture Production Code, better known as the Hays Code, was a set of guidelines used to identify acceptable matter in films. According to Barsam and Monaham (2013), types of content discouraged by the code included "nudity, adultery, homosexuality, gratuitous or unpunished violence, and religious blasphemy" (p. 452). The values stressed during the golden age of Hollywood were not in touch with the current generation. Violence, nudity, and sex became mainstream in film during the 1960's.
