Before WW1 started, a lotof the alliances were already formed. The reason was mostly because the countries wanted to be protected in case they were invaded or had a problem, in which case their allies were supposed to go help and support.
During the year 1890, Britain, Russia, Italy, France, Austria-Hungary and Germany were the six main countries in Europe. At the time, France disliked Germany because they took over Alsace-Lorraine during the Franco-Prussian war, and Alsace-Lorraine was under France’s control.
Germany formed an alliance with Austria-Hungary and Russia to be protected, and the alliance was called the “Three Emperors League”. Germany was also part of the “Triple alliance”, which was made up of Austria-Hungry, Italy and Germany.
Due to an argument between Russia and Austria-Hungary over the control of the Balkans, the “Three Emperors League” fell apart. So Germany had to choose a side and decided to go with Austria-Hungary because of its army and because they ...view middle of the document...
In 1907 the “Triple Entente” was formed, which is an alliance between Russia, France and Britain. In 1908, a British newspaper called the daily telegraph offers an interview to the Kaiser and he agrees. The interview started well. The Kaiser said that “Germany was a friend of England”, but then he ended up getting frustrated because Britain declined the offer of an alliance again.
Germany’s only trusted ally was Austria-Hungary, but at the time Austria-Hungary and Russia were fighting over the Balkans. In 1908, Austria-Hungary took control of Bosnia, which caused a probability of war between the “Triple Alliance” and the “Triple Entente”.
The Kaiser decided to give all the support he had to Austria-Hungary by giving them a blank cheque, which meant all the money they needed. Due to the blank cheque, the “Triple Entente” backed down, so Austria-Hungary and Germany were delighted. But the conflicts between the “Triple Alliance” and the “Triple Entente” continue throughout 1908-1912.
In June 28 of 1914, the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated by a terrorist group of Serbians called the “black hand gang”. That commenced WW1, since it made Austria declare war on Serbia, which caused Russia to declare war on Austria and Germany to declare war on Russia. So France said he would help his ally Russia, so Germany declared war on France too. Then Germany invaded Belgium, which caused Britain to declare war on Germany because of its alliance with Belgium.
After that all of the countries started joining without even thinking about the problem. They just joined and supported their allies. A lot of the countries that had decided to stay neutral started joining because of their alliances with other countries.
When the war started, the alliances divided into two; the Allied Powers and the Central Powers. The main countries of the allied powers were Russia, France, Britain and Serbia. Italy joined later after breaking the “Triple Alliance” with Germany and Austria-Hungary. The central Powers were Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and Ottoman city.
During the war, many alliances got broken and new ones were formed. The reason was because of the countries’ amount of power.
