The typical American diet has become a very controversial and touchy topic that can easily offend some people. Many people from different walks of life all have the same problem in the U.S., their growing waistline. Does fault lie with the nations culture or is the fault our own? Many foods commonly eaten in the U.S. are considered fatty or unhealthy yet many Americans eat them anyway though the information and facts are clearly labeled on the packages of the food we consume. Are there any religious reasons behind our terrible diet choices? I can think of no religions that cause us to consume bad foods, usually the opposite is true. The most obvious answer of why Americans choose this unhealthy and often life threatening diet is because it tastes good, our lifestyles are too rushed to take the time to cook healthy foods, and we are fed a non stop stream of commercials telling us to eat all the wrong things. The typical American diet is undoubtedly one of the worst in the world, and without drastic changes will continue to be one of the leading causes of death and disease in the future.
A poor diet as a lifestyle choice is unquestionably accountable for many health problems including coronary heart disease (CHD), hypertension, and diabetes. These diseases affect many Americans today and are very detrimental to our quality of life. It is shown that people who suffer from these diseases are much more likely to suffer from depression. A diagnoses of depression only adds to an already bad situation with a disease and contributes to the patient being in even worse condition. The way depression makes CHD worse is by altering the mental condition of the patient (Smith 2). The treatment for this depression is the same as people without CHD but it can sometimes be more intensive with it. It is predicted that by 2020 CHD will account for the greatest percentage of disease in the U.S. along with depression.
There have historically been other nations with much different diets than the US. In Japan and China for example, people in fact have had diets that were nothing like ours in portion size as well as food type (Brown 1). Even though today they do have McDonalds in Tokyo the Japanese still eat largely different foods from those consumed in America. The main fast food store in Japan known as Yoshinoya which has been around since 1988 sells very healthy sushi which is still a large part of the Japanese diet. The Japanese still need their food served to them fast and cheaply but they have more stores with healthy eating options available to them. Americans tend to be rushed and lazy in their choices of where to eat though if they choose they can still eat healthy and have food that is prepared quickly.
