American Food, If You Try It You Need To Diet
Every country eats food there is no question there but what makes the U.S. such an obese country that it has a stereotype of being large? The united states is a gold standard for countries all over the world to look up to and it is a center for world trade which makes it a very fast pace country where people do not seem to have time to eat a proper meal. The American diet is very different than those in other countries partially because of portion sizes, and it can be fixed in a way to increase the lifespan and the general health of American citizens. Americans are also very influential and there are several things that can make someone want to eat a certain burger or drink a certain soda, things that influence people like this are the commercials which are designed to get people to want to eat their product every day for the company’s financial gain.
The content of the American diet has changed dramatically in the past century from local markets and restaurants selling fresh local food to selling overly processed food. The food America consumes is dominated by foods that contain chemicals and other harmful substances that give the food longer shelf life. Now all of the food that people in the U.S. consume is the cheaper more processed foods causing the American health to decrease instead of consuming the foods which should be consumed such as fruits, “Studies on antioxidants in reducing cancer risk reported that there was a lower risk with increased intake of fruit and vegetables”(Smith et al). The U.S. is not a totally poor country but majority of the people that shop in the grocery stores do not have much money so the purchase cheaper food with the long shelf life grabs their attention with disregard for the health facts. The same happens at many fast food restaurants, people being in a hurry tend to disregard the fact their food was just thawed and deep fried. Another reason for the crisis known as the American diet is not just the disregard for the health facts but the portion sizes as well.
All of the food found on shelves has a label on it showing the appropriate portion sizes and most of the food people think is one serving is probably something much higher. As well as grocery store food, fast food has a way of not letting people know the appropriate portion sizes of the food on their menu. The U.S. restaurants have perfected a trick of using their waiters as salespeople to get them to order more food and especially more drinks, which is worse for you than what you are probably eating. Another problem is caused by the buffet idea that you pay one price and eat as much as you want, the problem with this is people always over indulge and think they have to get their money’s worth so they keep eating until they are sick. In a test created by Brian Wansink the portion size phenomenon really came through making people want to eat more food...
