Retirement sounds great right, you just can?t wait until that day comes when you don?t have to worry about traffic on the way to work, or if your boss is going to hassle you for that simple mistake you made yesterday. Well there are some things you should know about retirement, like for instance financing your retirement is not going to be easy. As it is today no one person can live off what the government sets aside for each of us when we hit the major milestone in our lives known as retirement, also known as 65 years of age. So, you sit there and ask yourself what can I do? Plan, and do this by putting your faith and money into accounts handled by people who know what they are doing, ...view middle of the document...

Last year, three-quarters of those surveyed by the Employee Benefits Research Institute (EBRI), Washington, D.C., said they had no idea how much money they needed to save for retirement (McCune). Meaning you should begin to plan for your retirement as soon as possible to have enough money to finance your retirement when you are ready (http://retireplan.about.com/library/weekly/aa FAQ.html).When people think of retirement they think of social security. Social security was created in August of 1935 to help the elderly and disabled with monetary needs. Our conventional view of retirement isn't that old to begin with. It dates back to the late 1930s, when Franklin D. Roosevelt established Social Security and set a mandatory age of 65 as the point at which people that paid into the system would receive benefits (McCune). The only thing with social security is that a person does not qualify for social security until normal retirement age. The age at which a person may first become entitled to unreduced retirement benefits. For persons reaching age 62 before 2000, the normal retirement age is 65 and after this the age of full retirement may be reached months afterward depending on when your birthday is. Social Security is largely a "pay-as-you-go" system with today's taxpayers paying for the benefits of today's retirees (www.ssa.gov). And that is all that social security is, is a ?benefit.? Creating a problem with social security, because social security was never meant to be the sole source of income in retirement. Therefore, some seven in ten American workers want to invest at least a portion of their Social Security withholdings into an optional or mandatory personal retirement account, to help create a higher level of financing for the retired. They want more involvement and control over their Social Security benefits as a way to protect what they've contributed (Best). There are many other ways to finance your retirement one of them is a 401 (k) plan. A 401 (k) is a retirement plan that allows employees in private companies to make contributions of pre-tax dollars to a company pool that is then invested in stocks, bonds, or money markets. This type of retirement plan is extremely common among small businesses and such. Providing workers with a secondary type financing for retirement is sometimes crucial as a benefit for working for a small business. 401 (k) plans have revolutionized retirement savings for a great time in our history of retirement. This view of retirement funding, if only for a brief and shining moment, meant that an employee could have a 30-year career with a single company. With his 401 (k), Social Security benefits and personal savings, the retiree could live comfortably in his remaining years (McCune). Even with all these prosperities come down falls. Exclusively dealing with the stock market and such investments people?s dollars are continuously being put in the hands of our country?s economy. For a while 401 (k)?s were the...
