My Favorite Statement Essay

779 words - 4 pages

It has been a good while since I have came across something that required me to choose from so many options. Jesus speaks with such power and authority throughout the Gospels it is plausible that one could take anything that Jesus says and write about it until there fingers fell off. I was referring back in my Bible reading notes about the Gospel accounts and I had wrote down a passage of scripture but did not write anything about it. This grouping of verses is out of the book of Matthew in chapter eight verses nineteen through twenty two. Verse twenty jumped out of the book at me, this is by far my favorite statement that Jesus makes throughout the Gospel accounts.
Leading up to this passage there are several miraculous things that Jesus does. He is going about His usual preaching and teaching. But stops to heal a man with leprosy, he heals a Roman soldiers servant, and then heals Peter's mother-in-law and several others.. This caused a multitude of people to follow Him. He preaches a sermon on a hillside near Galilee and then returned down into Capernaum. Then in verse eighteen Jesus gave His disciples the commandment to cross onto to the other side of the sea of Tiberias. When they arrived a young scribe came to Jesus boldly and made expressed his passion to follow Jesus. At first glance it seems almost as if the scribe is not sincere because the scribes mentioned in the Gospels are those who thoroughly studied and expounded upon the law. This made him an unlikely candidate to fully surrender himself voluntarily. The way Jesus answers this mans bold remark is my favorite statement that Jesus makes. Verse twenty says, “And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.” At first glance it seems like Jesus is denying the man because He can not supply a place to sleep. But when Jesus speaks, it is worth more than just one glance.

Jesus tells this young scribe that he might be making a rash and emotional decision. He reminds the man that He does...
