The Career Changer Essay

796 words - 4 pages

There is always a point in everyone’s life where they think about what they want to do and who they want to be. One day I did a lot of thinking about what I want to do and who I want to be, and I realized that what I wanted to do earlier this year is not what I want to do now. I wanted to be an Accountant at the beginning of the year and now I am leaning towards the Engineering field. I took the Accounting class that the school offered and it was nice at first but it got tedious and confusing. So now the whole story of me not being an Accountant is about to be told.
First lets start off by explaining how all of this started. It all started last year while I was picking classes for senior year, I was looking through all of the options and I saw Accounting. So I signed up for it thinking I would like it because it involves math which I am good at. Well for the first 9 weeks of first semester I was liking the class and I was really thinking about ...view middle of the document...

The first thing that came to my mind is Astronomy because I have always loved learning about space and how other planets function and move around the Sun. So I started to do more research and there really wasn’t a big market for Astronomy as far as jobs go, so I was looking at other options and I was thinking Physics because I really enjoyed Physics when I took the class, so I did some research on that as well and I found the same for that as I did for Astronomy. So the next thing I could think of is to call someone from the college I am going to, Baker College of Muskegon, and talk to them on what I should do.
In the end, I called someone from Baker College and talked to him for a little bit and let him know what I have been thinking and he recommended some courses to go into that may fit the skills that I have. The main things that he said is that Astronomy and Physics are not very common in the workplace and since they are a career college and try to help their students find a job it would be hard for those career choices. So he suggested Engineering because it has all of the things that I like, Math and Physics. So we talked a little bit more and he was talking about how the Astronomy idea is good for a hobby or a side job. He also said that if I really wanted to go into but he said for any kind of job opportunity I would have to go to school for 8-10 years so that I can get my Masters in Astronomy and then I would most likely have a chance at a job.
In conclusion, the thought process for all of this was stressing and very overwhelming because it made me think of maybe going to a different college which I did not want to do. I am glad that I made this decision now and not in the middle of summer when I already had all of my classes picked out for the first 10 weeks of college. The people from Baker really helped me through all of the thought process and thinking of what I wanted to do and I am really happy that they were so flexible and so helpful with all of this. Also I am glad that my friends and family were here to help me as well. This is hopefully a really good decision and hopefully it will lead me to a good career that I really like doing.
