The Causes And Effects Of Global Warming

2288 words - 10 pages

Global warming is the rise in average temperature of Earth’s atmosphere and oceans. If the warming continues it will have drastic effects on our lives in the future. Extreme weather will become a reality. That means intense weather during the summer such as major droughts and severe weather. There are a countless amount of ways that we as a society can do to help slow down global warming. Global warming is real, despite what the naysayers say, and it will affect humanity in many different ways if the world does not take this problem seriously.
Global warming is going to be a big problem for Earth’s inhabitants, and there are things that we have done to cause it. For instance, at the ...view middle of the document...

If we continue to burn these amounts of greenhouse gases then it'll be disastrous.
Even though there are things we can do to hopefully stop or slow down global warming, there are signs that it may be too late. Man has made a huge imprint on the earth and while some things have been good, there have been others that eventually may lead to our planet being uninhabitable. Unless the world slashes carbon dioxide levels back to 350 ppm, we will have started a process that is out of humanity's control (Carey). So far the carbon dioxide levels are exceeding 450 ppm and it doesn’t look like they are going back down anytime soon. If the average temperature of the Earth keeps rising this will cause the polar ice caps to melt. With the polar ice caps melting it will pose major problems for coastal areas. Ice reflects sunlight back into space and with them melting this would subsequently make the Earth’s temperature rise (Carey). This means that if the carbon dioxide levels don’t get back down to an acceptable rate it could end badly for us. Fortunately, there may be ways to stop it.
Many of the things that we do or use everyday emits harmful things into the environment. People doing their part in helping prevent global warming could help in a huge way. One way people can help stop global warming is to conserve energy. Fluorescent bulbs can last up to ten times longer than regular bulbs. They also can keep a half-ton of carbon dioxide out of the air, lower energy bills. There are other things they can also choose such as public transit, biking, walking and carpooling. There is also the option of driving a environmentally friendly car such as a hybrid. Tire inflation can also be helpful too. If the whole United States kept their tires inflated properly, gas use would come down two percent. A tune-up could boost your miles per gallon anywhere from 4 to 40 percent, and a new air filter could get you 10 percent more miles per gallon (NRDC). These simple things can help keep hazardous gases from being emitted into the atmosphere.
Even though most of the world agrees that global warming is a problem, there are a substantial amount of people that do not believe. Many of those nonbelievers have good points as to why they don’t believe that global warming is happening. However these can be easily be refuted with science. For instance, some non-believers point to the fact that there are harsher winters with record snowfalls (Cook, 2010). This theory can be refuted because global warming actually causes more moisture to be in the atmosphere resulting in a higher amount of precipitation. In fact most of the recent record snow falls have happened during some of the hottest global temperatures on record. Instead of disproving global warming, this theory actually helps the argument that global warming is happening. Another point that they try to make is that if global warming is real it is not an urgent problem. This is far from the truth. Many...

These gases are creating carbon-dioxide; therefor making the air warmer also. The main natural cause for global warming is volcanoes, but also the sun’s brightness also has an effect. The warmth of the sun when at its highest point causes the troposphere and stratosphere to get warmer. The heat of the sun is absorbed into the earth and

The Effects of Global Warming

2226 words - 9 pages The effects of global warming have caused humans to open their eyes to the ecosystems’ vulnerability as well the inhabitants housed there. The cause of global warming can be attributed to greenhouse gases (Robinson et al 2009). Greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere allow the Earth to remain warm by providing a blanket like cover. However since the nineteenth century humans have caused an increase in the production of greenhouse gases in the

The Natural Causes of Global Warming

If we want to even try to predict what the climate will do in the future, we must look back over a longer time interval. The recent global warming is not a result of human activity, but of natural causes. 97 percent of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere comes from nature, not from man.
