Characteristics of God - The Significance
"What comes into our heads when we think about God is the main idea about us." So says A.W. Tozer in his timeless novel in the characteristics of God, The familiarity with the Sacred. Why would he make this kind of extreme pronouncement?
In our hearts we understand the preceding is accurate. It's not sufficient to follow "God." Then we're simply creating an idol in our heads, if we all simply make up our own thoughts concerning what He's like.
Characteristics of God - The Foundation
Jesus came to show the God of the Bible. And God has shown Himself in His novel. Any deviation with that penetration from Him is a made up God. Tozer in Knowledge of the Sacred uncovers 18 features of God in the Bible. These features are reiterated here, even though not in exactly the same sequence.
The Bible says to praise God for who He is, particularly in prayer. Much of Psalms is a good case of this. Most people focus their praise in just a few places, including God's love, and then spend the remainder of their prayers asking Him for things.
Aspects of God - The Characteristics
Wisdom: Wisdom is the capability to devise perfect endings and also to realize these ends by the most perfect means. Put simply, God makes no errors. He is the Father who actually knows best, as Paul explains in Romans 11:33 “Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand His decisions and His ways!”
Infinitude: God knows no bounds. He's without measure. This characteristic by definition impacts all of the others.
Sovereignty: That is the aspect by which He rules His whole creation. It's the application of His other aspects of being all-knowing and all-powerful. God is in control of all that occurs. Man still has a free will, and is accountable for his selections in life.
Holiness: It refers to His majesty and His perfect moral innocence. There is simply no sin or evil idea in God at all. His holiness is the meaning of that which is pure and righteous in all the universe. Wherever God has appeared, including to Moses at the burning bush, that place becomes sacred simply for God having been there.
Trinity: The truth of God showing Himself in three persons is comprised, although actual word isn't used in the Bible. Although, God reveals Himself in three men, God is one and cannot be split. All are involved completely whenever one of the Trinity is active.
Omniscience: God possesses best wisdom and thus has no requirement to learn. God has never learned and cannot learn. Omniscience signifies all knowing. God understands everything, and His knowledge is limitless.
Faithfulness: Everything that God has promised will come to move. His faithfulness guarantees this fact. He fails to lie. Christ even said that He is the Reality.
