for this essay we had to have an interview. if and when you use this, you'll need to change the parts in the 2nd paragraph that mention a teacher at my high school. thank you.In order for our country to get to the point it is at right now, many wars have been fought and many great sacrifices have been made. The Civil war may be the most important event in the history of the United States. The war abolished slavery and reunited the country. The war brought the ideals of liberty, equality, human dignity, and justice, to reality. Without the Civil War, our country wouldn't be the way it is right now. So much happened with the war that it would be nearly impossible to talk about it all, but there were many key events and people who took part in the it that shouldn't be left out of here, and that's what you'll learn about.I interviewed Mr. Dan Christensen, who is a social science teacher here at our school. He's been teaching about the Civil War for the past 21 years, and has also taken some classes on Civil War reenactment. He said that the war was probably the second most important event in the history of our country, but it affected a much greater number of people. It falls in just behind the American Revolution, and without it we wouldn't even have the United States. The way things were going in our country, it would have crumbled without going to war, and it defined our country as a free nation (Dan Christensen). The war began on April 12, 1861 and ended during May of 1865. There was never a formal declaration of war, and there wasn't an armistice or a treaty saying that it was over. More deaths occurred during those four years than in any other war in the history of the United States. It was all about the issues of the states rights and Negro slavery. With non-slave territories entering the Union as states, the South was worried that they would lose protection for slavery in the Senate and their power would steadily deflate with the admission of more and more non-slave territories. They believed it was in their best interest to secede from the Union. In all actuality, in the beginning Lincoln and the Republicans had made a pledge that they wouldn't try to end slavery. They just didn't want it spreading from the 11 states that it was already in.Although the war didn't begin until 1861, it became well known in 1850 that a peaceful solution to the slavery issue was impossible. That year, California wanted to join as a free state. Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri thought it was fine, but Senator Henry Foote wasn't. Senator Benton criticized Foote for his views on the situation, and at that moment Senator Foote pulled out his revolver. No shots were fired, but it was obvious that it was a very heated subject and it wouldn't be solved peacefully.Henry Clay, who was known as the Great Compromiser, wanted an agreement and said that the nation could not break apart. He came up with Clays Compromise of 1850. It said that California could join the...
