The CN tower is the most popular attraction in all of Canada. This is the defining feature of the Toronto skyline. When traveling into Toronto, there is nothing that stands out more than this structure. Towering over everything else, it is a marvel of engineering and the limits that we can push construction to.
Standing at a towering height of 553.3m or 1,815ft and 5 inches, it is a monster among the other structures in the area. This structure sits in the heart of the city which lies right on the waterfront of Lake Ontario. Along with the SkyDome, and the Hockey Hall of Fame, the CN tower lies on Front Street. This street is the heart of the entertainment district, as well as the direct middle of the city. This makes it accessible extremely easily by car, by train, or from a boat coming across Lake Ontario. The addition of the Fast Ferry which provides non-stop travel from Rochester, NY to Toronto by boat adds to the tourism flowing into the province. This project was financed by the Canadian National who wanted to demonstrate the strength of the Canadian industry by building the highest self standing structure in the world.
The building of the CN tower was not just to have another huge building rising out of the ground and identifying a city. This tower actually had a very practical use in the city. In the early 1960’s there was a huge boom in the engineering construction in the Toronto area. This resulted in a number of buildings rising over hundreds of feet. In order to solve this problem, a tower was built to rise above all of these buildings and stop the problem with communications. With the microwave towers rising to over 338m, and the antenna rising to the top of the tower at 553m, the communications problem was quickly solved. The addition of this tower allowed for the waves to be picked up by the tower and easily transmitted out to the public. Today the reception in Toronto is impeccable due to the antennae carrying UHF, VHF, Microwave, TV and fixed mobile communications capabilities.
The construction of the SkyDome was completed April 2nd, 1975. The entire project cost a total of 63 million dollars Canadian. After construction it became the tallest self supporting structure in the world. This feat wasn’t topped until the Ostankino Tower was built recently. The structure of the tower consists of reinforced steel with post tensioned steel. The poring of the concrete started on February 12, 1973. The structure was built strong enough to support an observation deck that rests at 342m. This allows for the public to travel up to this observation deck. The tower is so high that the structure needs to be reinforced. A foundation was built to go 15m into the ground. This allowed to the structure to be stable at the bottom, which supported...
