The Contextual Factors Behind Academic Dishonest Behavior Among Undergraduate Students Of The University Of Prishtina

Academic dishonesty is an issue; it affects all levels of educational system and involves a large number of students. So, there is a need to find a solution for this problem. I have focused on the reasons why students are involved in academic dishonesty and how. If a student is awake that a majority of his peers are going to cheat or do any dishonest behavior he may be more likely to also do it. So, peers behavior provides a kind of support to cheat.
In order to have complete picture of education in Kosovo I will have to go a little back and take a look at the system from different angles. The roots of high education go back to 1960-ies and existed as a part of University of Belgrade. The University of Prishtina was founded at year of 1969, consisting just four faculties. The University grew to thirteen faculties by 1990. The official languages were Albanian and Serbian. The destruction of former republic Yugoslavia brought hardship to Kosovo concerning all aspects of life. The educational system went through huge negative changes, which drew all Albanian professors and students out of University. They were forced to install a parallel system which brought a hard fight to save the most valuable part of any modern society, intellectual potential. Even being beaten and expelled from University the teachers did not give up, education was the only institution which Serbia could not take over. Before the war erupted, the oppression by Serbs pushed Albanians to form the University buildings, to private houses and its basements mostly. Working underground in constant fear, professors and students were not able to accomplish education in absolute way. Such environment caused final product not comparable to the modern and free world educational system. The World University Service was the key player in helping the University of Prishtina in post-war period.
Kosovo as a new independent state went through very difficult time in the recent history. That fact inevitably affected its educational system in many ways. The oppression, fear, instability and the war were parts of each citizen’s daily life and living in such environment produced an educational system failed to satisfied modern world criteria’s. As a result of such hardship there is great need that system has to be healed and revived in the manner that it will be competitive in the modern world. Thinking and writing about those difficult times, is not easy but that makes us, people from Kosovo, striving to improve ourselves the best way...
