The Controversial Topic Of Abortion Essay

2025 words - 8 pages

One of the most controversial topics in society is abortion. The act of removing a fetus to end pregnancy has divided the world. Although abortion is being discussed among friends, politicians, and even on blogs in the modern era, it has been in practice in the US since the early 1800s. It was mainly done to keep unmarried women from having children if they accidentally got pregnant. They considered an unmarried pregnant woman not marriageable material so abortion was one way to hide that fact that woman were pregnant at one time. To further hide the fact that the woman was pregnant, abortion was done illegally and as a result numerous deaths occurred due to that fact. Abortions kept increasing to a point that 30 percent of pregnant women were choosing an abortion by the 1970s (Johnston). As the topic grew on the minds of people two opposite groups emerged defining the abortion debate, pro-life and pro-choice.
Pro-life activists march on the idea that abortion is murder, since they consider the fetus to be alive. Pro-choice activists march on the idea that it is the mother’s body and the final choice should be left up to the mother. Pro-choice activists’ state history as one reason abortion should be lawful. Until the 1967 abortion procedures were done by anyone from mid-wives to servants. Since these people were amateurish in their work, abortions would lead sometimes to death. The National Center for Health Statistics shows that abortion was actually the one of the leading cause of death among young women before 1967(NCHS*). This data shows even if the risks were very high people would rather take the chance and go with abortion. Legalizing abortion would allow it to be standardized and provide a more suitable environment for abortions. When compared to present day data, almost one million abortions are done every year legally in the US with very minimal side effects. The opposition argues that if abortion was illegal it would deter most of the woman from having abortion pre-1967, saving all of those lives. They further quarrel that abortion does have side effects since it not natural. Childbirth has evolved over thousands of years to be the best suited way for the body to produce a baby. If science steps in and botches the system, side effects will occur, since abortion is not natural way. Pro-Choice group argue that the US statistics show that the risk of maternal death by abortion is lower than childbirth through 21 week gestation. The pro-life group counter argues that abortion is a procedure that could kill the mother while childbirth is natural. If something goes wrong with natural childbirth only then should science step in to give the mother a hand to safety deliver the baby. Both groups argue two separate ideas based on two separate definitions.
A common ground could be achieved by both parties if they decide on the exact definition of when the baby is alive. Pro-life activist consider abortion murder. The moment egg and sperm...
