In the article, “The Critical Importance of Retrieval For Learning” the researchers were studying human learning and memory by presenting people with information to be learned in a study period and testing them on the information that they were told to learn in order to see what they were able to retain. They also pointed out that retrieval of information in a test, is considered a neutral event because it does not produce learning. Researchers were trying to find a correlation between the speed of something being learned and the rate at which it is forgotten

In the third condition, recalled pairs were dropped from the test but the still showed up on the list to study from. In the fourth condition the subjects had to study the list of words, be able to recall it and then drop it from further practice. At the end of each learning phase, the students were asked to guess how many words do they think that they would get right after a one-week period.
After a week long, the researchers found that there was no difference in the learning curves for all four conditions. In the learning conditions that required retrieval practice, students correctly recalled about 80% of the pairs on the final test. In the other conditions in which items were dropped from repeated testing, students recalled just 33-36% of the pairs of words. It is safe to say that, despite the fact that students repeatedly studied all of the word pairs in every study period, their long term was much worse than students who were repeatedly tested on the entire list. Even though cumulative performance total was identical in all four in the four conditions, the total number of trials in each test condition was not the same.
