Language and System of writing
The system of writing that the ancient Egyptians used is called Hieroglyphics coming from the two Greek words hieros meaning holy and glyphe meaning writing. Hieroglyphics are a series of pictures drawn from one side of the page to the other. Hieroglyphics can be read and written from left to right or right to left depending upon which way the human and animal characters are facing. If the characters face the left then you read from the left to the right. Each hieroglyph represents a single sound, but as the Egyptians wrote sentences and words they took advantage of the vowels so they are still trying to figure them out today. There are two basic types of hieroglyphs ideograms and phonograms. Often the ideogram and phonogram are the same images.
For us to figure out the hieroglyphics they had to be written down first. The Egyptians had to find ways of writing things down so most of the hieroglyphics we find today have either been carved into rock or walls of temples buildings and pyramids. The Egyptians would also choose to write on papyrus with a pen made from reed this would be use along with ink.
Cities and Grand Structures
There are over 90 pyramids in Egypt and some took over 20 years to build but to us it still remains a mystery to how they managed to build them. The grandest pyramids that were ever made were the pyramids of Giza. These were the tombs to Menkaura which was the smallest of the three pyramids, the second smallest belonged to Kaefra and the largest of the three pyramids belonged to Khufu. They were the three pharaohs of the old kingdom. All these pyramids are also located on the west side of the Nile in fact all of the pyramids are located on the west side of the Nile because the sun was symbolic for life and the sun would set on the west and rise on the right. The other great structure that they built was the sphinx. The sphinx had the head of a pharaoh ram or a hawk and the body of the lion, is was also known to have told riddles some hard some easy if you got the riddle right the sphinx would die got it wrong and the sphinx would have you for lunch. When the Egyptians built cities the main thing that they had to consider is were you would place them. The two things that they would have to take into account are, the height and the flooding of the Nile and the water supply. The mud brick houses that they built had feebleness for water and damp conditions meaning they would fall apart and crumble. However when this did happen a new house would just be built over the top of the ruins of the old remains.
