Do you fear death? If you are given the death penalty, your life will be taken. It will be the end of everything. You will lose your family, friends, future, goals and everything that belongs to you. Death creates fear, and it is taboo to many people. Since many people are scared of death, they will not do anything that will cause them to get the death penalty. Many people believe that the death penalty is the only way to stop criminals who commit serious felonies. Cassell and Bedau state, “A Gallup poll in October 2012 states that 70 percent of Americans favor the death penalty while only 25 percent oppose it” (186). Although the death penalty violates human rights, in some ways it is beneficial because it removes serious criminals, frees them from a life in prison, and deters potential criminals.
The death penalty clears the criminals who had serious felonies out of the world. No one has the right to kill innocent people, which mean no one has the right to play God. Those human beings who do such evil, such as serial killers, murders, and terrorists, deserve to die because they hurt people who are innocent. They are the people who don’t respect life. Kenneth Allen McDuff who did such an evil was considered as a ghost. In 1966, McDuff had murdered and raped three teenagers. He was given the death penalty but he escaped three times from the execution because the United States abolished all death penalties in 1972. It did not make McDuff recognize his crime. As a result, it caused a tragedy. In early 1990, he raped, tortured, and murdered at least nine women in Texas. He was caught in1992 and sentenced to receive the death penalty. He finally had the execution in 1998 (Cassell and Bedau 183-185). If the United States had not abolished the death penalty in 1972, the death of those women may not have happened. The death penalty is the only way to deter the heinous serial killers.
Terrorists also deserve the death penalty. Osama Bin Laden is one of the famous terrorists. He was one of the leaders of Al Qaeda who was responsible for the 9/11 attacks. According to Helena Cooper, a reporter of New York Times, Osama Bin Laden had been killed inside Pakistan by an operation that was ordered by Obama. He has been killed, which means he had been sentenced to the death penalty. He will never harm people anymore because he was deterred by the death penalty. The death penalty stops the violent criminals because it makes them never kill again.
The death penalty also benefits serious criminals by freeing them from a life in prison. There would have been a long imprisonment waiting for those people if they were not sentenced to death. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, there are 32 states with the death penalty and 18 states without it. Some of them never had the death penalty and some of them abolished it. In those 18 states, the most serious punishment is life imprisonment. Many criminals were sentenced to over hundred-year imprisonment,...
