Video games are seen in almost every home in developed countries, from computers, smartphones, and gaming consoles they are being implemented in our everyday lives. Their effects on people mostly adolescents have been controversial, but many studies have shown their positive effects are far greater than their negative effects.
In the 1940’s the term video game was born due to the growth of computer advances and research. It is not possible to pinpoint of the first made video game due to the lack of concern for documentation and the loss of older computer systems. The Magnavox Odyssey is the world's first commercial home video game console, and was also documented as the first video game. Very few people had video game consoles in their home at the time, but growth of arcade popularity pushed developers to bring the video game experience to the home for a reasonable price. Thus leading to the atari, nes, and the playstation. This is most likely when parents started to have concern for video games and their effects.
Most parents of teens today did not have video games available or in their lives when they were teenagers themselves; so they have a completely different view of them than teenagers today do. Nearly all teenagers play video games, and nearly all parents do not like video games. Some parents will automatically assume is that it is new and different so its bad, but what they don’t know is that video games can help adolescents and adults in many different ways.
Since early video games parents have only focused on the few negatives of video games, few people have noticed the extensive positives. Video games literally work out the brain, to win many games requires complex and high levels of thinking. Many of these skills taught by video games are not taught by schools.
Video games can teach you problem solving and logic, many games like Angry Birds and Tetris require the player to solve puzzles. They can teach how to manage resources in games like Simcity the player learns to manage resources that are limited, and decide the best use of resources, the same way as in real life. The creator of Simcity has claimed that many players have been inspired to become real world architects after playing the game.
Many games also emphasize creativity. The game Minecraft is well known for pushing creativity throughout the game. The player can build anything he wants with a few limits to resources. The game can also be played with other players online giving the players the opportunity to build what they want with their friends. The game has high attraction to adolescents, and many parents approve of their children playing minecraft due to its low violence and extensive positives to brain development.
