Sleep serves multiple purposes, ranging from restoring energy to maintaining homeostasis. Recent research has also shown that sleep plays a crucial role in memory consolidation (Scullin, 2013). There are two main types of long-term memory: explicit (declarative) memory and implicit (procedural) memory. Declarative memory is responsible for learning facts, events, and memories that can be consciously recalled, whereas procedural memory is the unconscious memory of motor skills and how to perform tasks. Knowing that sleep benefits memory consolidation including declarative memory, and forming and retaining memories of old faces is vital for social interaction, one would expect sleep to enhance face recognition memory as well.
There are at least two possible explanations for why sleep could improve face recognition memory—sleep could either temporarily resist the memory from exposure or subsequent interference during wakefulness, or consolidate the declarative memory so that it remains stable over a lasting period of time. Both hypotheses, while they differ in important ways, are nonetheless in accord with the widespread belief that sleep is beneficial to the people’s fitness.
