For years, society has been using drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, for recreational uses. However, unbeknownst to most people, the impact this has on society is off the charts. Not only does the use of these substances affect millions of people’s health a year, but they also cost the US economy hundreds of billions of dollars in increased health care costs, crime, and lost productivity. Since most people are unable to use these substances without having negative effects, the only true way to put and end to them, would be to outlaw drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.
One main way that drugs, alcohol and tobacco affect people is by harming their mental and physical health. Some examples of mental illnesses drugs can cause are drug-induced psychosis, drug induced anxiety disorder, and drug induced mood disorder. These effects can be both long and short term. They can also affect people’s personalities, and how people act overall. Drugs, alcohol, and tobacco also can be extremely detrimental to physical health by causing cancer, liver failure, and even death. Not only are these effects painful for the drug user, but they also can cause emotional damage to those close to the drug user. When most people use drugs, they don’t consider the health problems, which accompany the use.
Another way drugs, alcohol, and tobacco affect society is by costing the U.S. economy hundreds of billions of dollars in increased health care costs, loss of productivity, and crime. Sometimes, when people abuse drugs, they may find themselves unable to work. When this happens, the government has to pay for disability costs, and “withdrawal from the legitimate workforce” costs. This means that the government now has less money to be spent on preventable problems. Along with drug abuse also comes increased crime. When crime increases, money has to be spent on stopping the crime. As a result, once again there is less money for other things. Overall, the economic costs, which drugs cause, take a huge toll on society.
Even after hearing all the facts, there are some people that refuse to believe drug, alcohol, and tobacco use is even a problem. According to some, America is a free country, so they should be able to do whatever they want to themselves. This is an extremely immature and selfish way of thinking, because it does not even give a thought to how others may be affected. Even though America is a free country, many things that drug, alcohol, and tobacco use can lead people to do, people are not free to do in the US. Another way some people deny that drug, tobacco, and alcohol use is a problem, is that they say if these substances are used responsibly, there is nothing to worry about. This is true to a certain extent, however most users of the substances don’t use them responsibly enough so that there are no negative effects. The only way to put a stop to these negative effects is to completely outlaw drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. The people who don't think that drug, alcohol, and...
