Odysseus, Telemachus, Penelope, and the suitors all showed jurassic developments in their lifelong journey to achieve kleos or to be living amongst their society.
Odysseus, Telemachus, and Penelope, all based their journeys on kleos; however, Penelope did not think hers was ineffective without Odysseus.
Telemachus spent all of his life in the palace and up until his early twenty’s, he had not started his journey to earning his kleos.
Telemachus tries to find his true father and become a man of importance,
“...So he can make inquires about his father’s return and win for himself a name among men”(1.101-102).
Telemachus feel that he needs to show the world that he isn’t living in the shadow of Odysseus’ kleos by not having stepped up to the suitors.
He wants to figure out before his kleos can begin, who his father was, while he starts to earn his name in the society.
Many people who were close in touch with Odysseus really had stories of his honor and nature to tell.
Great stories of him at battle were told by not only the people he knew but anyone who has heard of war,
“...But listen to what that hero did once on the land of Troy, where the Achaeans suffered”(4.260-261).
Odysseus’s name was not lost in the hearts of people he was close to such as Penelope, Helen, and Eumaeus
Helen brought his name up in the palace to those who were grieving for him.
The only reason behind Odysseus’s decision of going off to war was so that he could get kleos, this decision of his effected many people in the long period of his absence.
When Odysseus is so far in his journey, he forgets his morals and qualities that lead him into not thinking before doing any more.
Without thinking about the consequences of Poseidon, Odysseus shouts back to the Cyclopes,
“...tell him that Odysseus the marauder did it, son of Laertes, whose home is on Ithaca”(9.503-504).
Odysseus get over proud of blinding Poseidon’s son, Polythemus, which was not a good thing because shouting his name was the reason he is lost at sea.
This pride in him, blinded him by not thinking about the consequences that he lead himself and his crew into.
By shout back at Polythemus, was that one moment he puts himself and his kleos before the safety of his men who also needed to get home.
When Odysseus runs into a new challenge he doesn’t keep in mind that the previous hurdle for his men was Circe transforming them into swine.
He get very arrogant and places the safety of crew in danger just to obtain kleos,
“…this isn’t the fist time we’ve run into trouble. This can’t be worse…”(12.216-217).
He gets selfish with his needs and the greed of kleos instead of having a greed for the welfare of his crew.
In Odysseus’s mind he feels that from all of the trouble him and his crew has gotten into,Odysseus feels that nothing is worse if he has suffered this much in his journey.
Odysseus was absent for twenty years looking for kleos, it makes Penelope feel that her kleos is only...
