What is Literacy? “Literacy is the quality or state of being literate” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). The traditional element of literacy can be coached however in today’s society that is not the case because within this millennium the digital age has taken over. Literacy starts from an early age so therefore, having the ability to be literate has a strong impact on ones future, the traditional forms of literacy are also being erased and replaced with digital forms, literacy is something that can be improved, being literate is very important because in today’s society lacking literacy has major consequences. According to Wisen & Bailey another common element to improve literacy is by informing parents to provide books around the home, reading to a child within there early stages of development, demonstrating reading habits, and making efforts to read as a family because at the end of it all learning starts at home first and I personally feel that parents have the control over the ability of improving their children’s level of literacy. Learning shouldn’t have to be boring having fun and learning at the same time can help enhance an individual ability to learn efficiently.
Literacy is something that society should take seriously and I say this because not being literate has major consequences and it can cause many problems in society such as; “families live in a cycle of poverty, people without literacy are often marginalized and disenfranchised and it is a issues of health and safety, both at home and in the workplace” (Life Literacy Canada).Also people with low literacy or no literacy at all may have problems with organizing information and following lines of reasons.(Literacy and the police). Literacy is something that matters in the world and I feel it should be taken serious due to these consequences.
In Today’s society reading and writing is fundamental. Individuals who uses this fundamental element are considered literate. What makes a person literate? Learning a set of skills (such as learning the alphabet, learning how to form letters and spell words expectations and behaviors, as well as specific skills, related to written language. Learning the alphabet to learning basic arithmetic literacy in a whole spectrum is important. Learning how to form letters in cursive writing many individuals in today’s generation don’t know how to cursive write because it was taken of the school system curriculum. “That sense of elegance is seldom seen in daily handwriting.
