The End Of The Beginning Essay

1072 words - 5 pages

2088 is the predicted year that the world’s fossil fuel resources will be depleted. “Clearly fossil fuel reserves are finite – it’s only a matter of when they run out”(Al Gore). Fortunately, there are many alternative energy sources in the form of renewable energy easier to obtain and also more practical in world use today. Renewable energy sources should replace fossil fuels, because they are very abundant and environmental friendly.
As humankind advances in technology, so does our consumption of fossil fuels. As a whole, the world needs to move away from fossil fuels, into new renewable resources. The most common way of extracting natural gases today is the use of drilling and hydraulic ...view middle of the document...

Another type of renewable energy is hydropower. The water powering hydroelectric plants is a clean, releases zero-emissions, and renewable. The National Hydropower Association states that “using hydropower avoids 225 million metric tons of carbon pollution in the U.S. each year – equal to the output of approximately 42 million passenger cars”(NHA Board). With the ability to harness the force of water more cities and states are slowly transitioning towards hydroelectric power to suit their energy needs. Another effective renewable and zero-emissions energy source is wind energy or the use of turbines. The advantage of wind is that first it is free and with new advances in technology it can be captured more efficiently.
Once a wind turbine is built the energy it produces does not cause green house gases or other pollutants.
Although wind turbines can be very tall each takes up only a small plot of land, meaning that the land can still be used. Wind turbines are especially helpful in remote or desolate areas were electricity is normally not found.
Wind turbines have a role to play in both the developed and third world.
Wind turbines are available in a range of sizes which means a vast range of people and businesses can use them. Rural households and smaller towns are great places were wind turbines are most effective today. It may even be that that the best solution to our energy problems may be to have a balance of many different power sources working together. With so many ways to move away from fossil fuels, it should be easier to transition to these ways than anytime before.
One argument that comes up again, and again, is that renewable resources do have limitations to their use. A disadvantage that is found with renewable energy, is that it is often difficult to make amount of energy equal to that of a fossil fuel generator can make. Even with this said it is still possible to use these resources, as long as the rest of the world is willing to do their part to conserve and cut back on energy uses, allowing these resources to become more practical. Additional disadvantages of renewable energy sources are that they are not...
