The book I read for my book report is The History of The Computers written by Barbara A. Somervill. Early humans needed to count things long before they had word for numbers. They used their fingers and toes. But twenty was not a big enough number to count the people in the village or to count the number of sheep in a herd. So they invented the abacus. The first computer was produced by a German engineer, Konrad Zuse, in 1936. Future computers will know how to respond to our commands. Computers have become an important part of our lives.

The abacus is a counting table for adding and subtracting numbers. The origin of the abacus is uncertain, it could have been invented in either China or Babylonia. Many years after the abacus was invented in China, Egyptians developed the bead-and-wire abacus. The Romans later developed a hand-held abacus. In the 1600s, William Oughtred and Richard Delamain worked on creating a slide rule. The slide rule served as an early calculator but it was not a computer. In 1642, Blaise Pascal built the mechanical calculator to calculate tax money owed to the government, but his invention failed because very few people were interested in buying it. In 1801, Joseph-Marie Jacquard developed a system of punch cards to guide a loom. In 1833, Charles Babbage designed the Analytical Engine to perform mathematical calculations. In 1890, Herman Hollerith built an electronic machine to count the U.S. Census. It took a long time to actually build the computer.

In 1936, Konrad Zuse created the first computer ever, the Z1. Germany used Zuse’s invention to help Germany win World War 11. In 1942, John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry develop the ABC Computer. The U.S. Army hired John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert to build a calculating machine. It took them a year to design ENIAC (Electronic Numeric Integrator and Computer). They finished ENIAC in the fall of 1945. They received a patent for the...
