The Four Functions Of Management Essay

The primary objective of this paper is to define functions of management planning, organizing, leading, and controlling and to how each function relates to my own organization. Management can be defined as the process of reaching organizational goals by working with and through human and non human resources to continuously improve value added to the world. Well-managed organizations have a competitive advantage over poorly managed ones for a number of reasons: 1They influence their competitive external environments through more productive and focused activities. 1They monitor and coordinate internal resource usage through an organized process that leverages the full, rather than partial, impact on their assets. 1They manage system changes more successfully by negotiating favorable contracts and creatively adapting to external forces. 1They have a more flexible, committed workforce because their managers routinely exhibit the sound human relations practices that build a strong work community. 1Level 3 HeaderPlanning is considered to be one of the major four functions of management. Planning means identifying where you want to go, why you want to go there, how you will get there, what you need in order to get there, and how you will know if you're there or not. Planning is setting the direction for something, in some way, and then working to ensure the system follows that direction. Whether it is an organization, department, business project, etc., the process of planning includes working backwards through the system. They start from the results (outcomes and outputs) they prefer and work backwards through the system to identify the processes needed to produce the results. Then they identify what inputs (or resources) are needed to carry out the processes.2Effective managers must pay attention to what goes on both inside and outside of their organizations. Regardless of where their attention might be focused at any particular time, managers are part and parcel of organizational settings. An organization is a coordinated group of people who function to arrive a particular goal. Every organization has a structure and strives to achieve goals that individuals acting alone could not reach. All organizations strive to achieve specific goals, but they don't all have the same goal. All of these goals, however, are related to the overall goals of serving customers and earning profits. Regardless of a organization's specific goals, the job of managers is to help the organization to achieve those goals.1Directing means leading the organization, groups and individuals and, also, influencing them to implement the plans. In other words, directing is exercising leadership and human relation skills in implementing and carrying out approved plans through others in order to attain or exceed objectives.2Controlling is the measuring and correcting of activities...
