AbstractPlanning, organizing, leading, and controlling: the four functions of management. This paper discusses what the four functions of management are, and how they relate to my organization. Delivering strategic value, building a dynamic organization, mobilizing people, and learning and changing directly relate to the four functions of management. The goals my organization has set in stone pave the way to a prolonged future. With the implementation of a strong business strategy using the four functions of management, the Madison TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchise will flourish.The Four Functions of ManagementPlanning, organizing, leading, and controlling: the four functions of management. "Management is the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals" (Bateman & Snell, 2009, p. 19). The organization that I work for is a moving company, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, where there's one manager who oversees the operations of the franchise. He delegates managerial responsibility over the movers and the drivers to the dispatcher and the trainers. This paper will discuss what the four functions of management are, and how they relate to my organization.PlanningPlanning is "[t]he management function of systematically making decisions about the goals and activities that an individual, a group, a work unit, or the overall organization will pursue"( Bateman & Snell, 2009, p. 19). Through the planning function, management focuses on delivering strategic values, values that give the organization a competitive advantage.At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, the manager holds a weekly meeting where he goes over five figures that are defined by our performance system. As a trainer it is my responsibility to contribute whatever I can to keep these figures at their current level, or to improve them. Using this information, the other trainers and I plan what our main focus for improvement will be for the upcoming week.OrganizingOrganizing is "[t]he management function of assembling and coordinating human, financial, physical, informational, and other resources needed to achieve goals" (Bateman & Snell, 2009, p. 20). Through the organizing function, management focuses on the goal of building a dynamic organization, an organization that is full of "energy."Currently, the manager has asked the dispatcher to compile a major spreadsheet that keeps track of employees' names, phone numbers, number of hours worked, employment start date, damages, comment card scores, and other critical data related to work.
