The Future Of Liquefied Natural Gas

The production of natural gas has increased over the past decade along with its consumption. However, some of the top consumers consist of countries such as Japan and South Korea, where natural gas is not produced at a sufficient amount domestically. As a result, the need for liquefied natural gas, also known as LNG, has increased. This need for LNG comes from the concept of condensing natural gas to its liquid state so that its volume is reduced to 1/600th of its original volume, making it easier to transport (Source, 2---). In other words, the temperature of the natural gas is reduced to about -260 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the natural gas is converted into LNG, it is put through the fractionation section where certain types of hydrocarbons are separated from methane and placed into a separate storage container. After this fractionation process, the LNG is nearly pure methane. At this point, the LNG is ready to be placed in the refrigerant section for storage. Then, the LNG waits to be moved to the loading section where it is placed onto specialized ships or trucks for transportation. Through these processes of preparing the natural gas for shipment, the sellers of the natural gas are increasing its value by creating almost pure methane. In effect, importing countries are receiving not only natural gas, but natural gas in an almost pure form, which is ideal for producing energy. The energy potential of LNG is also making it an increasingly attractive option for importing nations.
