In ‘The Hunger Games’ written by Suzanne Collins, several relationships develop and in particular the relationship between Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. Peeta’s crush on Katniss began on the first day of school, when they were five. He clearly recalls Katniss wearing a red plaid dress and having her hair in two braids. The first time Katniss noticed Peeta, was on a heavily raining afternoon. Katniss had tried selling Prim’s baby clothes in the public market with no success. Katniss’ family was starving and hadn’t eaten anything for three days straight but old dried mint leaves that were found in the back cupboard and boiled water. Katniss and Peeta experience The Hunger Games together and their relationship gets stronger throughout the Games possibly because they are both scared and want company. They have an on-camera romantic relationship and they are known as ‘the star crossed lovers’. Throughout the games Peeta genuinely falls for Katniss but Katniss on the other hand is pretending to be in love with Peeta. This helps attract sponsors and assists them throughout the games because sponsors make donations which are given to their mentor, Haymitch, and the money is spent on gifts like medicine and food.
The Gamemakers change the rules allowing both tributes from the same district to win if they are the last two alive, but towards the end of the games the change of rules is revoked because the rule book says only one person can claim victory. Peeta tells Katniss to shoot him and vice versa. If their relationship hadn’t bloomed when they were in the cave healing Peeta’s minor wounds, burns, stings and fever and hiding until Peeta got stronger, Katniss would have killed Peeta without hesitation. Katniss keeps thinking about the words Peeta has said ‘We both know they have to have a victor’ (p. 295). Knowing if they were both going to die, there would be no winner and the Gamemakers would have failed the capitol, Katniss devises a plan in her head that she thinks will enable both Peeta and herself to stay alive.
