The Golden Age Of Flight Essay

The 1930’s is considered the Golden Age of Flight due to the rapid advances in technology regarding the introduction of flight in World War I and an increase of mass production ability. As the first commercial flights began during the beginning of the decade, approximately only 6,000 passengers boarded a plane. By 1934, there were about 450,000 and in 1938 there were bout 1.2 million passengers (Air Transport). Improvements in air travel during the 1930’s made traveling for both leisure and vacation easier and faster, yet it remained a luxury mainly for the wealthy, politicians and celebrities.

None of the planes from this time were created anywhere near the standards or size of today, but they were exceptionally luxurious due to the passengers that they attracted (Novak).
Those who flew during this time expected the best conditions, mainly consisting of politicians, celebrities, and the wealthy. President Roosevelt was the first president to fly, and in 1932 travelled on a Ford Trimotor, still a governor at this point, from Albany to Chicago. In Chicago, he was announced a candidate for the Democratic Party in the presidential election and also soon after delivered his New Deal speech. Roosevelt also took advantage of the flight opportunities when visiting other countries. Planes were also preferential for celebrities, but many were not allowed to do so. Many agents and employers considered traveling dangerous, so especially with actors it was in their contracts that they could not fly. This was especially enforced during filming in case of a disaster (Air Transport).
As did the rest of the aviation industry, flight attendants changed drastically during the 1930’s. Today, the field is mostly women, but during the 1920’s, it was mostly men, called cabin boys. They were normally young men that helped passengers with their luggage, nerves, and directions. The first woman to become a flight attendant was hired on May 15th, 1930 by Boeing Air Transport. The new air stewardesses needed to meet certain expectations, including being no taller than 5’4’’ and less than 118 pounds, between 20 and 26, and finally yet most importantly, single (Commercial).
While the interior of airplanes was appealing, the reality of flying was not so pleasant. The planes of the 1930’s contained luxurious seats, wet bars, smoking lounges, and fancy decorations (Who Flew). They also were lacking air conditioning, heating, and circulation. There was always an unpleasant smell from all of the necessities to get the plane to the next destination, and planes weren’t pressurized.
