Jay Gatsby is an interesting character in the novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Great Gatsby is narrated by Nick Carraway, who moves to Manhattan, where his cousin Daisy Buchanan lives. Nick moves next door to an elaborate mansion. The owner of this mansion is Jay Gatsby. Nick discovers Jay and his cousin Daisy had a past relationship, and Jay wants to reconnect with Daisy. In this novel, Jay displays several qualities which make him a fascinating character. Jay Gatsby is mysterious. This is evident because we do not know where he obtained his money. Jay Gatsby is also romantic. We witness this through all he does for his love for Daisy. Lastly, Jay Gatsby is determined. The author shows this through every move he makes to become closer to Daisy. Jay Gatsby’s love for Daisy Buchanan leads to characterizing him as obsessive.

” (65) Another mysterious trait of Jay Gatsby, is that he is never seen at his own parties he throws. These are ways Jay Gatsby is revealed as being mysterious.
Jay Gatsby is also romantic. Throughout the novel we see the multiple romantic ways he tries to win Daisy over. One time we see this is when he orders an abundance of flowers to Nick’s house in order to impress Daisy. Everything Jay does revolves around Daisy and his love for her. When Jay arrives on the day Daisy is coming over Nick says, “An hour later the front door opened nervously, and Gatsby hurried in. He was pale, and there were dark signs of sleeplessness beneath his eyes.” (84) This reveals just how much Gatsby cares about Daisy and how he wants her to be in love with him. He centers his life around winning Daisy's love and approval. He focused on changing his life and becoming rich for the sole purpose that Daisy would want to reconnect with him. This shows his passionate love for Daisy. This is why Jay Gatsby is considered romantic.
Another trait seen in Jay Gatsby is determination. Jay Gatsby had nothing as a young man, but eventually worked hard enough to become wealthy. This shows determination in his goal to become successful in life. He believed you could work your way up through determination and hard-work. After Jay dies, his father says to Nick, “Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something” (173) All his hard-work was done in his quest for Daisy. Everything he does, every purchase he makes, every party he throws, is all part of his grand scheme to bring Daisy back into his life for good. Jay Gatsby had to work hard to get to this point, which shows he is determined.
Jay Gatsby is mysterious, romantic and determined. His mysterious side is shown by the lack of information we have on his character. Jay Gatsby’s romantic side is seen through his obsessive love for Daisy Buchanan. We witness Jay Gatsby’s determination through all he does in his quest for Daisy. Jay Gatsby can be characterized as obsessive through his love for Daisy Buchanan in the novel, The Great Gatsby.
