The Hearst Castle is a home so big that it took 32 years to complete! The home has 165 rooms built on 165,000 acres of ranchland. This architectural masterpiece also has two pools, three guest houses and a zoo.The Hearst Castle is located in San Simeon, California, near the Santa Lucia Mountains. The Hearst Castle overlooks the Pacific Ocean and San Simeon Bay. Its nickname is ''The Enchanted Hill,'' and is now a historical monument.George HearstGeorge Hearst, the founder of the Hearst Castle, was born in 1820 in Franklin County, Missouri. The local Indians called George "boy that the earth talked to", probably because he had such good knowledge of mining. In Missouri he was supplied with little formal education, and I find this amazing that he became so smart.George Hearst owned many important mining claims in western United States. He owned the Comstock Lode in Nevada, the Ontario Silver Mine, the Homestake Gold Mine in South Dakota and the Anaconda Copper Mine in Montana. I'm sure the mines helped earn a good portion of his fortune. In 1862 he married Phoebe Apperson at age 41, and she was only 19. In 1863 they had their only son William Randolph Hearst. At age 44 he bought a 48,000 acre ranch called Piedra Blanca Ranch, and later added San Simeon and Santa Rosa ranches, all located in San Simeon, California. In 1880 he bought The San Francisco Examiner Newspaper, later handing it over to his son in 1887. George was a U.S. Senator from California from 1887 until his death in 1891. George was a very rich and prosperous man.Phoebe HearstPhoebe Apperson Hearst owned most of California's silver mines. She gave birth to William Randolph Hearst on April 29, 1863. She and William toured European museums in 1873 for an entire year. In 1887 Phoebe set up a home in Washington D.C. while George was a U.S. Senator. At George's death in 1891 she inherited all his wealth. What a jackpot!Phoebe Hearst was the first woman Regent of the University of California serving on the board for 22 years from 1897-1919. She funded the international architecture competition and a scholarship program for the university. Mrs. Hearst also presented the Hearst Memorial Mining Building and Hearst Hall. She was the co-founder of the (PTA) Parent Teachers Association, and was named the first honorary president of the women's Panama Pacific International Exposition. In 1918 she was a victim of influenza, and later died in 1919. That was quite a busy life!William HearstWilliam Randolph Hearst was born April 29, 1863 in San Francisco as an only child. At age 10 he traveled across Europe with his mom, collecting stamps, beer steins and German picture books. William loved to be outdoors as much as possible. At age 16 he attended the St. Paul Preparatory School near Concord, New Hampshire. At age 19 William entered Harvard University, became a business manager of the Harvard Lampoon, was elected to the Hasty Pudding Theater Group, and William left Harvard before he graduated. William...
